The violence of the public reaction against paedophiles should be seen as a cover-up — not, heaven knows, for any sexual attraction towards children on the part of the general public — but as a sign of the guilt they feel for disliking children so much.[Auberon Waugh, The Spectator, 1st Ocotber 1977]
Except of course that really that feeling of guilt (not to mention the revulsion) is at the realisation that anyone might actually like children full-stop!
Hatred towards children could play a role in this. However, I blame the hysteria and the media more. Again, with the statistics of child abuse being pretty high, the hysteria will be there for decades.
