The Waffen SS ended up being far more multicultural and multi-ethnic than most people realise. Partly this was because as the War went against them they started recruiting from not just non-Aryan but also from non-Christia populations. And partly it was an inheritance of the Austr-Hungarian Empire (previously the Holy Roman Empire).
